The city of Cologne has compiled statistics on the cases of infection in schools and daycare centers. And the curve is pointing steeply upwards, especially for daycare children. While 259 day care center children were still infected with Corona on January 19, there are currently 410 infected children (as of January 26, 2022). The numbers also went up for the educators and the other employees in the day care center – albeit only slightly, as the table shows.
Only last week there was a major corona outbreak in a daycare center in Düsseldorf. The daycare group in the Bilk district therefore had to be closed.
Cologne: What to do if my child has Corona? Do I have to be in quarantine?
In the event that your own child has Corona or a corresponding suspicion exists, the following rules must be observed:
- Care in the day-care center is not possible if the child shows symptoms of illness (e.g. fever, dry cough, shortness of breath, loss of smell and taste) or has to be in quarantine
- If the child shows symptoms of illness, this should be monitored at home and the cause clarified by the pediatrician’s practice
- If the child is infected with Corona, & people living in the same household are also in quarantine. This includes, for example, parents and siblings.
- But be careful: The quarantine obligation does not apply if these people are either boosted, both vaccinated and recovered, have been vaccinated twice (only between the 15th and 90th day of the second vaccination) or only recovered (only between the 28th and 90th day after taking the positive test)
- The child may only return to the day care center after the end of the quarantine if it is symptom-free.
- If there are justified doubts as to whether the child is symptom-free, the management of the day-care center can request that the legal guardians take the child to a pediatrician’s practice before the start of care. The responsibility lies with the parents, proof does not have to be shown.
- A medical mask must be worn when dropping off and picking up the child.
