Residents overwhelmingly believe in Europe
Euro-skepticism which affects several neighboring countries seems to spare Luxembourg. According to the special Eurobarometer on the future of Europe, published on Thursday by the Commission and the European Parliament, a very large majority of respondents in the Grand Duchy (89%) felt that Europe “is a good thing” for Luxembourg”. Among young people, the figure is even more pronounced (96% for 15-24 year olds, 94% for students).
Sign of attachment to the European idea, a majority of respondents (52%) believe that more decisions should be taken at European level, compared to 39% of all EU countries combined. This does not mean that the residents are not critical with the Union. 50% of people in Luxembourg say they are quite in favor of it, but not the way it works today.
Among the areas for improvement, greater consideration of the voice of citizens (91%) and efforts to protect and strengthen democracy (90%) are advanced. Climate change (49%) tops the list of main challenges for the European Union, according to Luxembourg residents. 506 people were interviewed in Luxembourg for this survey.
