New Zealanders in Salzburg: The Winging it podcast for expats (and Salzburg residents)
New Zealanders in Salzburg: the Winging it Podcast
The story goes like this: Jonny lives in New Zealand and somehow likes to get out. Goes on a trip to Thailand, his travel buddy leaves him. He meets Maria from Salzburg, who is now also alone. Together they travel on. Both believe their acquaintance is over when the break ends. But then. But then Jonny flies to Salzburg to see Maria again. And stay there.

When Jonny arrives in Salzburg, they first go to the farm where Maria lives with her parents. Maria has to work right now and is not there, but her parents are. They don’t speak English, Jonny doesn’t speak German. Therefore, people talk with their hands and feet. And of course it works. The two have been living in Salzburg for two years now, no longer at the farm but in the city and why are we telling you this at all?
Yes, exactly: Why are we telling this at all?
Jonny is the host of the Podcast “Wing It”. And the name says it all: Winging it means just trying it out, it will go wrong somehow. And is therefore Jonny’s motto in life. Moving to Salzburg without any knowledge of German, starting a podcast without prior knowledge. And so forth.
I am Winging It Podcast he talks to people from all sorts of countries and asks what they are doing here and how they are doing. What you notice here and in general. Incidentally, it all started with a glass of wine on the Kapuzinerberg. The own situation was reflected on with an Australian friend and in the meantime Jonny thought: Oba, someone has to record that! The rest is history.
The Winging it podcast simply tries it out
We think it’s cool: wings it means something like “just do it and see” in German. An attitude that makes infinitely many things in life possible, for example a podcast – even though you’ve never done it before. What we want to say: Be like Jonny and just do it.
Extremely productive – and an extremely large expat community in Salzburg
when you look at how many episodes Jonny shoots out on average, you have to start calculating. How many expats actually live in Salzburg? The community, Jonny tells us, is really not that small. And yet the podcast almost came to an end. Jonny was now in Salzburg arrived and began to doubt. Would anyone find it interesting at all? In the end, Gabrielle from the English Center (Go, E-Vorstadt!) slapped his fingers and motivated him to continue. Thank you at this point, Gabrielle.
Winging it Podcast on Instagram and Facebook
As life goes, Jonny is constantly evolving. He now finds it funny to share situations he experienced in Austria on TikTok, Instagram or Facebook. Then there are categories like trivia or Austrian whoops and people, that’s quickly funnier for Austrians than for the rest of the world.
And how does the future look?
Incidentally, the episodes are recorded in Jonny and Maria’s apartment in Parsch. A nice step out of his comfort zone, says Jonny. After all, he invites complete strangers to his home. But it has always worked great so far. so let’s go straight to the next question: What does the Winging it podcast of the future look like? It is a hub for the expat community, for everyone who has already arrived in Salzburg and everyone who is still working on it. The work on the podcast and the acquaintances that went with it helped Jonny a lot to settle down in Salzburg. And home, he says, is wherever Maria is anyway. Moiii!
