East Naples, are off-limits in the overpass construction site: residents’ sos
The viaduct along via delle Repubbliche Marinare has now almost completely disappeared. The “monster” of Barra, a district in the eastern area of Naples, was knocked down in several weeks of work. Complex and delicate interventions that required the opening of the construction site on weekends with workers at work even on Sundays. For some days, however, we have only been working in part of the area.
In particular, workers and vehicles are concentrated in the space next to via Volpicella while the more extreme one in the direction of San Giorgio a Cremano has been fenced off and made impracticable. The white sheets cover a few meters of the surface of the former overpass as materials containing asbestos have been made. The situation has alerted the company carrying out the work which, therefore, has arranged for the two points – now fenced – to be placed in wait for the bureaucratic steps for the subsequent removal and reclamation interventions.
The circumstance is made known by Gennaro Frezzetti, who has always been involved in the demolition of the Naples East overpass together with Vania Varlese and other residents of the area. The loros is about the time necessary for loros to complete the procedures and the process by the competent bodies, such as the health ones, after the work already done by the municipal ones. In fact, after years of waiting for the construction site to open, the contractor is proceeding to dismantle the infrastructure as quickly as possible as promised by the local administrators. The construction site was opened last autumn after several postponements. By next spring there should be no more traces of the viaduct and the road should completely change its face with new carriageway, sidewalks, green areas, rides, new lighting and parking areas.
The interventions in progress to eliminate the infrastructure – with the consequent closure of a carriageway – have shown, in recent weeks, how much the long stretch of via delle Repubbliche Marinare is fundamental for the viability of the entire city, even for heavy vehicles. In fact, there was no shortage of inconveniences due to the need for detours on secondary roads and a notable flow of vehicles. A circumstance that could reappear in the near future, necessary to close to traffic even when there is another carriageway to allow workers and vehicles to operate in complete safety.
Meanwhile, we are also thinking about the future viability of the area in consideration of the important number of vehicles that normally engage via delle Repubbliche Marinare in both directions, i.e. towards the center of Naples and towards the eastern area and that of the Vesuvian municipalities. In particular, it is the municipal councilor Gennaro (Rino) Amato (Alessandra Clemente group) who brings to the attention of the president of the municipality, Sandro Fucito, the councilor of the Municipality of Naples for infrastructures and mobility, Edoardo Cosenza, and of the municipal offices competent the request to review the layout of the intersection between via delle Repubbliche Marinare, corso IV novembre and corso Protopisani. The objective is a municipal council (Bar Consiglio, Ponticelli, second of Giovanni VI to Teduccio), second to prevent the isolation of the neighborhood by improving the flows entering and leaving the neighborhood communicating with each other “. In this sense, the lines of public transport that serve the eastern area of the city should also be reviewed.
