Celebrity Hotel Steigenberger has closed – BZ Berlin
The house on Los-Angeles-Platz near the Kudamm is to be renovated, converted and then reopened.
It was once one of the most exclusive houses in the city, and surprisingly it has been closed since the end of 2021 – the Hotel Steigenberger on Los-Angeles-Platz is (for now) history.
Almost 1000 guests celebrated the opening in May 1981 after 28 months of construction. The construction costs are around 72 million German marks.
The 398 rooms quickly became popular with celebrities: Tina Turner, Madonna, Marlon Brando and Sylvester Stallone are among the guests. Hans-Dietrich Genscher held a secret conference in the house, Luciano Pavarotti cooked his own pasta in the kitchen of the Presidential Suite (120 sqm).
There were parties and Berlinale receptions in the ballroom. But in recent years things have quieted down around the Steigenberger – there have long been fancier luxury hotels in the city.

The house changed hands three years ago. A major overhaul is now pending. The new owner, the US company Blackstone, promises: “We will invest an unexpected amount of money to renovate this iconic building and let it shine in new splendor.” However, it is still unclear whether a Steigenberger or another hotel chain will move in offend.
City Councilor Fabian Schmitz-Grethlein (42, SPD) on the BZ: “The conversion application is available. The renovation of the house is a good start to the changes in the neighborhood!”
