Solidarity: Emergency, Renzo Piano’s book on the pediatric hospital of Entebbe, in Uganda, is presented in Venice
Wednesday 26 January, at 6 pm, at the Emergency headquarters in Venice (Giudecca 212), “Emergency Children’s Hospital. Children’s hospital, Entebbe, Uganda ”, a volume by Renzo Piano on the birth of Emergency’s Center of Excellence in Pediatric Surgery in Uganda. An innovative and environmentally friendly hospital, the result of the international friendship between the internationally renowned architect and the founder of Emergency Gino Strada, to whom the volume is dedicated. The book is the latest in a series of monographs on the main projects carried out in the 50 years of activity of Renzo Piano’s construction laboratory. In this twelfth volume Renzo Piano tells how in the construction of the “children’s hospital” in Entebbe the approach to sustainability was also used in the design choices, using the same constructive principles of traditional houses, but in an innovative way and then making greenery , overlooking Lake Victoria and a garden of 350 trees, an important element for the recovery and healing of young patients. “When I met Gino Strada to talk about the project, he first said to me: ‘I want to build a shockingly beautiful hospital!’ We immediately got in tune, because I too have always thought that ethics and aesthetics are two sides of the same coin. This hospital will be a model of medical excellence, environmental sustainability, energy independence and harmonious distribution of space. We want to use the resources of the earth, water and the sun, and the best achievements of modernity. The real ones ”, Renzo Piano tolerated. The meeting will be attended by Rossella Miccio, president of Emergency; Lia Piano, curator of the volume together with Elena Spadavecchia; Simonetta Gola, director of the Emergency communication office; Giorgio Grandi, architect; Maurizio Milan, engineer, and Raul Pantaleo, architect. On the occasion of the presentation, it will be possible to visit the photographic exhibition “Scandalamente bello. The Emergency Pediatric Surgery Center in Uganda “.
