OECD starts membership talks with Bulgaria
“As a result of these technical reviews, the rules, policies and practices of the candidate countries will have to be changed before each accession to the organization,” the organization said in a statement.
The technical reviews will cover a wide range of areas such as free trade and investment, advances in public administration, integrity and anti-corruption efforts, and effective protection of the environment and climate action.
Once all assessments have been included, the final decision to join a country must be taken unanimously by all OISR member countries. Currently, 38 countries are members of the organization.
After 15 years of waiting
Bulgaria submitted an official application for membership in the OECD in 2007. In 2019, the country adopted a national action plan, which was agreed with the OECD. The latter country joins the many legal instruments for the organization in key areas, and an economic review of Bulgaria was built. However, when it was presented in January 2020, it became clear that there was no consensus on full accession to the state. This country also bought remarks: income can be done quickly, but this requires ambitious reforms, competition standards are high, the judiciary needs more efforts to be accountable and defend judicial independence, and work skills need to be improved. there are large income inequalities. Some of these cannot be implemented quickly, even if desired by all responsible parties, but others are fully achievable with political will, such as those in the judiciary.
