8 reasons why Finland wins
The good people of Finland claim to be ahead of the United Kingdom and most of the world in terms of the environmental crisis. I wanted to know more, so I packed my bags and went to Helsinki to ask difficult questions. I met politicians, business leaders and citizens to find out what environmental actions are really going on. Here are the top eight things that really impressed me.
- Helsinki sends a wooden satellite into space
Yeah. You read that right. Wooden satellite. WISA Woodsat is a nanosatellite designed and developed by UPM, a company that designs technology that uses little or no fossil fuels. The world’s first wooden satellite is scheduled to launch this year. It is made of birch plywood and withstands both hot and cold temperatures in orbit. It weighs only 1 kg here on earth and measures 10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm.
- Taxes are high and Finns are not bothered
Finland is a generous welfare state. Large sums of tax money are being used to improve public facilities. The quality of life is thus improving considerably, which explains why Finns do not care about extra taxes. Designed by ALA Architects, Helsinki Central Library Oodi is a public library with access to many facilities. From sewing machines to 3D printers, from computer game rooms Mention the lack of homelessness and maybe use some statistics. These taxes also finance progressive environmental policies.
- Clothing is made by creating cotton made from the fibers of used clothing
A brand new bio-based textile company called Infinited Fiber uses old clothing and materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill to create new garments by capturing their value at the polymer level. Founded in 2016, the biotechnology company has already gained a strong successor, including Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams, who co-modeled a song she designed that is made from 100 percent “infinite Fiber” materials.
- You can make bathroom appliances out of wood that is stronger than ceramics
Woodio is an eco-design brand that uses the world’s first 100% waterproof solid wood composite material. Their products are made from wood chips and advanced resins. Although the resin has a small carbon footprint, the company is actively working on new resins that can be made from cellulose in wood properties. Woodio offers products for bathtubs, toilet seats, sinks and other accessories in various shades of natural colors.
