Montpellier overtakes Monaco in the last moments! (3-2)
To continue a day of Ligue 1 already provided in goals, the MHSC came to the end of Monaco in additional time of a deleted match. The two teams surrendered blow for blow, and did not count their efforts, but the Montpellier residents emerged victorious from this important duel in the standings.
In a particularly lively first quarter of an hour, the two teams put a lot of energy into bringing danger to each of the two penalty areas. Ben Yedder strikes first from outside the box for Monaco, while Mavididi was taken over by Gelson Martins, very present on all fronts, before trying his luck in front of Nübel. The Montpellier residents put great intensity into the offensive task, and is rewarded in the 13th minute by an attempt converted on the fly by Elye Wahi in first intention.
Shortly after the half-hour mark, Jordan Ferri increased the pressure on the Monegasque ball carrier and recovered the ball high up on the lawn. Elye Wahi is served forward, and hands over the ball to Mavididi, author of a powerful shot from outside the area coming to shake the nets for the second time. In the wake of this achievement, Aurélien Tchouaméni finds an angle of pass just after the kick-off, and serves Wissam Ben Yedder in the axis, scored a header, replacing his team at 2-1 on the scoreboard. Half-time came at the end of a very fast-paced first half, as Omlin and his defense became particularly exposed to the Monegasque onslaught.
The rhythm has not fallen
In a quieter start to the second period than the standards of the first, the Montpellierans get the first clear chance shortly before the hour mark. Wahi is on the resumption of a cross from Germain, but sees his attempt diverted by Nübel on his line when the goal seemed inevitable. Despite the rhythm observed since the beginning of the meeting, the loss of balls remains at the heart of the game of the two teams, and does not allow either side to maintain a fluid game despite the Monegasques’ 60% possession around the 80th minute.
Just ten minutes from the end of the match, Monaco completely revived the interest of the meeting by scoring the 4th goal, thus bringing the score to 2-2. Vanderson places his recovery in the back of Omlin’s net, and punishes Montpellier residents who are less sharp in their intentions. In the 88th minute, Arnaud Souquet unleashes a powerful, distant shot, slammed by Nübel forced to relax. Neither Mollet nor Gioacchini manage to score next, with the last striker even sending the ball through the air from close range. It is at the limit of additional time that Cozza decides to launch a final sprint to recover the ball in the central circle, before passing to Mavididi at the entrance to the surface. The MHSC player hits first, and shoots the Monegasque goal to bring the score to 3-2 at the end of the suspense.
With this precious success, Montpellier moved up to 6th, one point ahead of Monaco, 7th. Stade Rennais are level on points with MHSC given their draw against Clermont earlier in the day.
