L1 (J22): Montpellier blows away Monaco
After two consecutive defeats in the league, Olivier Dall’Oglio’s men were keen to do the icing again in front of their Mosson home crowd. After a powerful first strike from Stephy Mavididi without danger for Alexander Nübel (6th), it was another Hérault striker, Elye Wahi, who made the difference. After a cross from Arnaud Souquet received by Mavididi, the English striker attempted a shot from the right counter. A ball deflected just enough to reach the right foot of Wahi, whose instantaneous half-volley from the right gave Alexander Nübel no chance (1-0, 13th).
Despite a header from Guillermo Maripán, which was narrowly deflected by Mamadou Sakho above the Montpellier crossbar (17th), it was indeed Jordan Ferri’s teammates who were going to increase their advantage. On a high recovery from the midfielder and Montpellier captain, Wahi could serve Mavididi from 25 meters. The powerful shot from the right of the former Arsenal and Juventus striker hit home in front of a disillusioned Nübel (2-0, 32nd). Wissam Ben Yedder, however, allowed Philippe Clément’s men to score in stride to reduce the gap before returning to the locker room, on a nice lobbed pass from Aurélien Tchouaméni (2-1, 34th).
Mavididi, Hérault hero
The 13th goal in Ligue 1 this season from the French international striker will allow the players of the Rocher team to start the second half with more confidence. Despite the steady pace, the attackers of the 2 teams were imprecise in the last gesture and that is how Wahi (58th) and Sofiane Diop (59th) missed two important opportunities. Until the goal of Vanderson (2-2, 82nd), after a cross from Caio Henrique badly repelled by the local defense.
The defender trained at Grêmio, for his first match in red and white, then scored the goal of the draw but it was without counting on Stephy Mavididi and his magnificent strike from the right under the bar of Nübel, in added time (3- 2, 90th+1) after a good effort from Nicolas Cozza. Montpellier overtakes its adversary of the day and joins 6th place (34 points, 1 unit more than Monaco).
