Cancer! Ex-Salzburg coach March about fate – football
For the first time, Jesse Marsch speaks about a dark hour in his life! A cancer diagnosis terrified him and his wife.
After a very successful time with series champions Salzburg, the US coach switched to RB Leipzig in the German Bundesliga. But while he was the radiant success coach in public, privately it was a heavy blow of fate. Shortly before the move, his wife Kim developed breast cancer.
“We had a rough time not knowing if it was treatable and how much time she would have left. In the end we were lucky and it was operable,” the 48-year-old told The Athletic. “She’s fine now,” he says, but it’s easy that the worst fears are not confirmed.
Corona and expulsion
In terms of sport, things didn’t go so well for the people of Leipzig. In December, Marsch had to vacate his post when he was in isolation with a corona infection. “I want to be with a team, instead I sat in the kitchen and watched training sessions, held video conferences. I coached games from the kitchen. It was terrible,” he recalled.
Now Marsch is looking for a new challenge in Europe: “There was interest from five or six leagues, also from the MLS, but I want to stay in Europe. I was surprised by the interest after the failure in Leipzig. I was unsure how the people would think about it.”
