Joseph Brot in Salzburg: “We love bread. And we love construction sites.”
Architecture and reduced design play a major role in all Joseph branches. What is special here in Salzburg?
Wayhead: The original building was completely bombed and rebuilt in the 1950’s. The passage was added and the building received the city’s honorary award for design. Of course, the building no longer looked the way it did back then, but we stuck to the original submission plans and rebuilt it exactly the same way. Just finding this conglomerate built here (note: the stone around the portal) was a real task. But it was worth it for the looks.
Pauli: It’s much easier to rip something out and put in something new than it is to keep what’s already there. We preserve quality and combine it with a vision. In doing so, we don’t want to act purely in terms of monument preservation, but want to shape the future in a sustainable way. The aim of this architecture is to be timeless, permanent.
Wayhead: We don’t buy anything either. No price tag holders, no pepper shaker, no chair. Everything that is in here is specially made. Produced regionally and reduced to the essentials, it is also sustainable.
