Helsinki unveils first candidates for Makasiiniranta renovation competition News
The Finnish capital is one step closer to announcing the planner for its next major urban development project. The City of Helsinki has announced nine candidates Renovation of a warehouse beach in the city’s South Harbor.
Suggestions from leadership groups Breeder + partners, White Architect, and seven others compiled a list of local and international companies competing to relocate the last undeveloped area of the old port area. The competition comes at a critical time for cities like Helsinki, when urban planners have to strategically redesign how public space is best designed and utilized in the future to address new human health concerns.
South Park – Your floor
“The level of competition groups is also high on an international scale. Expectations are just as high – this is a showcase for every player in the industry, and the consortia have certainly done their best in the competition, ”says Ville Lehmuskoski, Executive Director of the City of Helsinki’s Urban Environment Division. “This is not just about creating Helsinki’s maritime façade, but about creating an iconic place and landscape that is important to Finns.”
The list will be reduced to four proposals, which will be published in March. The official winner will be announced sometime in the fall. Helsinki City Council will have the final say on the winning plan before it is approved. The progress of the competition can be followed here.
Merimaili – Lübeck Pier
“Our goal is a memorable and maritime Magazine Beach, where culture and leisure are present everywhere and attract people from near and far,” Juhana Vartiainen, Mayor of Helsinki, said of the competition. “The events, services and inviting path in the seascape will contribute to the expansion of the city center to the South Harbor and at the same time increase the vitality of the region’s businesses.”
