From cannabis dishes to canned wine: These are the eight surprising food trends of 2022

Sugar Mizzy January 22, 2022

As we all leave 2021 behind, it’s time to look ahead. The year will be a top culinary year. Healthy bowls were the most popular dish of 2021 and they continue to gain in importance this year. But there is also room for new kitchens with hemp-infused dishes. Deliveroo overview of the food trends we can expect this year.

1. CBD Infused

We see CBD shops appearing in more places, so it is inevitable in our kitchen. CBD is the abbreviation for cannabidiol, a completely plant-based and natural product. CBD is extracted from the leaves and flowers of the hemp plant. The final substance is then dissolved in a natural oil to create CBD oil. Various dishes can be made with this oil. Normally you can already order CBD-infused from Love Hemp via Deliveroo in London, but also pre-preparations in Belgium.

2. Around the world

Meanwhile, delicacies such as hummus or moussaka are already a staple on the menu for many. In 2022, international cuisine will continue to advance. More and more people are looking for a varied diet with a menu that keeps going. This year’s favorites? Peruvian, Lebanese, Syrian and Greek.

Recommended: My Tannour in Brussels, Griik in Liège and Stick That Meat in Brussels.

3. Are you ready for Yuzu?

Yuzu, a until recently unknown citrus fruit from Japan, Korea and China is now conquering the world. The slightly sour taste of the fruit is often used for vinaigrettes, mayonnaises or even hard seltzers but is now finding its way into many kitchens. When combined with soup, vegetables, noodles and fish, yuzu is at its best.

4. After oat milk comes potato milk

there’s no getting around it: plant-based milk is here to stay! We always prefer to sip a latte with oat drink or a cappuccino with almond milk, but that could change. In the UK, potato milk is currently all the rage and happening here, who knows!

Tip: Oats Day Long in Brussels and Ghent.

5. It’s round and healthy

In line with good intentions, in 2022 we will opt for healthy food even more often. The poké bowl was the most procedural of last year for a reason. Each scale has its strengths. Opt for a poké bowl if you need extra protein from a buddha bowl if you like vegetables and superfoods. For breakfast or snack, a healthy breakfast bowl with acai is the way to go.

Tip: Hawaiian Poké bowl in Kortrijk, Ghent, Brussels, Leuven, Mechelen and Hasselt or at Acai Bar Gent.

6. On the go (non-alcoholic)

We all long to get outside more often and we prefer to do that in good company with a drink in hand. In 2022 we will spend our cozy moments together with cocktails in bottles and canned wine. What is that exactly? Cocktails in a handy portable bottle and wine in cans. Of course you already saw it, but in 2022 you can no longer ignore it. Time to taste!

Moreover, more and more of those delicious are even alcohol-free. Last year search less for alcohol. Millennials and Gen Z’ers in particular are cutting back on their alcohol en masse and the result is impressive: delicious mocktails at will!

Tip: Casper in Antwerp, Ghent, Leuven, Brussels and Bruges.

7. Spice spice baby

In 2022, herbs no longer only serve as seasonings, but are also real health boosters. One of those spicy toppers is hibiscus. It is full of vitamin C, directed against the spice, which is ideal for your resistance and skin aging. At many restaurants you will find delicious homemade ice tea with hibiscus, for example.

Recommended: Frites Atelier in Antwerp, Ghent and Brussels and Bollyfood Stories in Brussels.

8. Mushrooms

The New York Times now crowned mushrooms as “Ingredient of the Year 2022”. The versatility of the vegetable has a lot to do with that. The mushroom can serve as a delicious ingredient, psychedelic drug or even sustainable, compostable material. Moreover, they fully meet the requirements of 2022: sustainable, fair and quickly prepared.
