Paris is the model for a car-free Berlin – BZ Berlin
The French capital will largely ban cars from the center this year. A role model for Berlin?
The historic city center of Paris would be particularly affected: the inner four arrondissements and the districts north of the boulevard Saint-Germain are to be combined into a no-driving zone.
Only cyclists, buses, taxis and suppliers are allowed to use the streets there. During the election campaign, Bettina Jarasch (53, Greens) liked the Paris plans. In her party, support for the “Berlin car-free” initiative is huge.
Experts warn: The Paris concept cannot be transferred 1:1. The area required by “Berlin car-free” (everything within the S-Bahn ring) is significantly larger than central Paris!
The Champs-Élysées has been car-free on the first Sunday of the month since 2016, and from 2024 there will be more space for pedestrians and cyclists after renovation (costs: 250 million euros).
Cars were completely banned from the Seine embankments. There are now the same conflicts as in Friedrichstrasse: Rambo cyclists pay little heed to pedestrians.
