The price of milk in Portugal stood at 29.98 euros per 100 kilograms (kg) in 2021, below the 35.47 euros in the European Union (EU), according to a report by the subcommittee dedicated to milk.

“In 2021, the average price of PT milk stood at 29.98 euros per 100 kg, compared to 35.47 euros per 100 kg in the EU. A difference of more than five cents per liter (approximately one kilogram of milk), which reflects the difference of about 15.4% between Portugal and the EU”, revealed the document released this Friday, which was under discussion on the same day. January 12, between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Platform for Monitoring Relationships in the Agro-Food Chain (PARCA).

In turn, in 2019, milk consumption was around 112 kg per inhabitantleast 10% face a 2010.

In that decade, the drop in consumption was justified, above all, by for the reduction of milk for consumption, which went from 84 to 72.2 kg.

As of 2015, milk for consumption stabilized at around 73 kg per annum.

“[…] In the case of butter, the trend was reversed, with an increase in ‘per capita’ consumption of 24%”, he indicated.

In 2020, Portugal exported 266 million milk and dairy productswith emphasis on milk/cream in nature.

By market, according to the latest available data, reported to 2019, Spain was the main market, representing 91 million euros, followed by Angola (49 million euros).

The EU represents 63% of the sector’s exports“only the opposite situation occurred with cheeses and curd, which were mostly exported to third parties”.

In the opposite direction, in 2020, the amount of stood at 505 million euros, with emphasis on cheese and curd.

In 2019, products were essentially the EU leader, with Spain with 52%, followed by Germany and France.

“Portugal represents a negative trade balance of 239 million euros, despite having a different behavior compatible with the products. Milk and cream offer a positive balance, as does butter. In the opposite direction are cheese and curd, whey and yogurts”, he concluded.
