Just over two million passengers for Luxembourg airport
The health crisis has not spared Luxembourg airport. Travel restrictions have reduced passenger traffic. On the other hand, freight broke records…
In 2019, the last year before the health crisis, Luxembourg airport recorded around 4.4 million passengers.
After two years of pandemic, Luxembourg airport closes the year 2021 with a passenger volume of almost half of the pre-crisis level, with 2.01 million travellers.
In 2021, the demand for flights departing from Luxembourg was strongly influenced by health measures and dominated by private travel. This resulted in a high peak on days of individual traffic, compared to a very low number of passengers on days when demand was low and outside holiday periods.
110 destinations
Airlines offered passengers a wide variety of destinations. In 2021, more than 110 destinations were served from Luxembourg; they were all less supported by the pandemic at the time. In particular, Luxair, as the national carrier, offered many new destinations.
Among the novelties: the world metropolis dubai, Ostseestrandbad Rostock Laage, and the Scandinavian mountain airport Sälen in Sweden. Luxair has already announced that it will continue to expand its route network in 2022.
19% growth in freight tonnage in 2021
Global supply chain challenges, combined with low capacity supply have also increased the demand for full cargo flights in 2021. This demand has resulted in a 19% increase in cargo handled at Luxembourg airport compared to 2020, to reach 1,125 million tonnes in 2021.
Luxemburg airport thus reached a volume of more than one million tonnes of goods for the first time in its history.
The numbers to remember
