Demonstrations – Berlin – Extinction Rebellion demonstrated in front of a chemical company – politics
Berlin (dpa / bb) – The environmental protection initiative Extinction Rebellion demonstrated in front of the Berlin headquarters of a chemical company for more climate protection and species protection. Some demonstrators climbed onto the canopy of the Bayer Monsanto building on Müllerstrasse in Berlin-Wedding on Friday morning and displayed banners, while others briefly blocked the road. The police speak of around 40 activists. Everything is going peacefully.
On banner stand: “The climate crisis is here” and “Glyphosate danger zone”. Extinction Rebellion demanded in a statement: “We need an in-depth plan. Life on this planet is being destroyed by our agricultural and environmental policies.” The initiative requires the federal government to take action against the extinction of species and the threats to ecosystems.
The timing of the protest is based on the Green Week, which usually takes place in mid-January, the large trade fair for the food industry and agriculture. It was canceled due to the corona pandemic.
A few days ago, Environment Minister Steffi Lemke and Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir (both Green) announced a reorientation of agriculture with more environmental protection. By Easter, Lemke announced key points for an “action program for natural climate protection”. This also includes an “environmentally and nature-friendly” use of pesticides. Germany wants to take the herbicide glyphosate off the market by the end of 2023.
