In the last 24 hours, 58,530 new cases of covid-19 were confirmed in Portugal, a new record since the beginning of the pandemic. This is the third day in a row with more than 50,000 new infections.
The North continues to be the region with the most cases in Portugal, having reached 24,930 in the last 24 hours, followed by Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (17,673), Centro (8719), Algarve (2199), Alentejo (2011), Madeira (1890) and Azores (1108).
There is also a record of 49 deaths associated with the infection, according to the epidemiological bulletin of the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) this Friday (21 January). It should be noted that this is the highest number of deaths since February 20, 221 (11 months ago), almost when there were 58.
In the distribution of deaths by region, Lisbon and Vale do Tejo declared 19, in the North there were 14, in the Center it reached nine, in Madeira five, Alentejo and Algarve had one victim each.
Daily report also mentions that hospitals have 2044 hospitalized due to the disease (plus 40), of which 162 (plus 10) are in intensive care units.
The update of the incidence rate indicates an increase, now being 4731.3 cases of infection per 100 million inhabitants, compared to 4490.9 on Wednesday. This rise is common in the analysis done on the mainland which is now 4674.0 (was 4437.4).
