An invasion of Ukraine would be a disaster for Russia, US President Biden said at a news conference on the occasion of the year since he took office. According to him, the head of the White House predicted that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin would take some action against his neighbor, however, a total invasion would provoke a massive reaction and would be costly for Moscow and the Russian economy.
“He has to do something,” the US president told the Kremlin chief about Moscow’s possible future move against Ukraine. At the same time, Biden said that Putin did not want a full-fledged war. According to him, if Russia attacks Ukraine, it will be held accountable.
Russia has deployed tens of thousands of troops on its borders with Ukraine and now also in Belarus. Kiev and some Western countries claim that Moscow is preparing for a possible invasion of Ukraine and that it is preparing a provocation that should justify a similar operation. However, Russia, which annexed the Ukrainian Crimean peninsula in 2014, denies planning to attack its neighbor.
At the same time, Moscow is demanding binding guarantees from the West, including demands that NATO commit itself not to expand eastward. Washington and his allies refused.
