167 different nationalities
It’s not a scoop for anyone, Luxembourg is a land of immigration. A status once again confirmed by the recent inventory of the population of the City of Luxembourg.
A cosmopolitan country par excellence, the Grand Duchy is a melting pot of culture that brings together a multitude of people of different origins and backgrounds. The statistics provided by the City of Luxembourg on the occasion of the last City Breakfast do not say anything else and testify to the international character of the capital.
Thus, on 31 December 2021, the City of Luxembourg had a population of 128,514 inhabitants. An undeniable increase in demography has been observed in recent years. Thus, in 2010, the population of the capital was 93,865 inhabitants to reach 110,499 in 2015.
Among these 128,514 inhabitants, only 37,799 (29.41%) are residents of Luxembourg nationality, the remaining 90,715 inhabitants (70.59%) are of foreign nationality. It should also be noted that there is a greater proportion of men (51.91%) than women who live in the capital.
In total, no less than 167 different nationalities make up the latter. European countries are the most represented among the different nationalities: France (21,199 inhabitants in Luxembourg), Portugal (12,700), Italy (9,245), Spain (4,604), Belgium (4,529) or even Germany (3,907). More surprisingly, the City of Luxembourg has 411 Estonians, 332 Latvians, 314 Slovenes, 135 Cypriots and 126 Maltese among its members.
But the Luxembourg capital is not only a land of immigration for Europeans. Thus, 6,645 people of Asian origin live in the City. As well as 3,426 Africans, 2,997 Americans and 137 Oceanians.
A young capital
We have understood that the cultural mix of Luxembourg is a reality. But it is also important to underline that Luxembourg-City is a rather young capital. The majority of the population is between 20 and 41 years old, therefore an active population.
Finally, statistics show that certain neighborhoods seem more favored by people of foreign nationality. For example, the station district is made up of a large majority of foreigners (83.98%). The district of Neudorf is made up of 75.48% foreigners, 74.35% in Hollerich and 73.27% in Kirchberg. And then, the districts of Cents and Hamm are the least densely populated districts in terms of percentage of foreign population with respectively 48.99% and 54.90% of foreigners living there.
