According to the chairman of the Agricultural Union of the Czech Republic, Martin Pýcha, this should have symbolized the risk that “some fields important for Czech agriculture will end”.
Farmers complain that the new rules for allocating subsidies are intended to benefit small farmers. According to Jan Stibal, director of the pig breeders’ association, adjustments to the subsidy system may lead to higher food prices and the disappearance of livestock production in “It is necessary to support those who actually produce food,” Stibal added.
The Minister of Agriculture Zdeněk Nekula from KDU-ČSL stated that the changes are a compromise and therefore he does not intend to give in to pressure. He added on his twitter that he sees the demonstration as a form of communication and negotiation.
Today’s demonstration @ Agrarian Chamber of the Czech Republic AND @ Agricultural Union of the Czech Republic I perceive it as a form of communication and negotiation. But as I said, farmers have their doors open. Tomorrow we have all the working groups running, where we will thoroughly explain and adjust the key modifications of the Strategic Plan.
