Prague – In the crematorium in Prague’s Strašnice, the public can now say goodbye to film director Dušan Klein. The director and screenwriter, best known for his series of films about “poets”, died on January 9 at the age of 82. After the funeral in a close family circle, which took place last Friday, a farewell of friends, colleagues and the public will take place in the large ceremonial hall.
The mourning ceremony will include a performance by Klein’s student and director Jiří Strach. They will recall Klein’s work with short examples and project the memories of various personalities. Petr Malásek will personally arrange the musical accompaniment.
“The ceremonial hall will be open for an hour and a half, so even those who miss the beginning or those who should come after the official memory can say goodbye to director Klein,” Miloslav Šmídmajer, on behalf of the family, told ČTK.
The first three parts of Klein’s legendary “poetry” series in the 1980s attracted over five million viewers. The trilogy also saw post-revolutionary sequels reflecting the new reality, three volumes were created in 1993, 2004 and 2016. The last part, How Poets Wait for a Miracle, was recorded under the subtitle The End of Legend. Another of Klein’s works is the bitter satire The Good Pigeons Return from 1988. In the main role with Milan Kňažek, it takes place in an anti-alcohol hospital. In the early 1990s, Klein was successful with the television detective series Sins for Father Knox, based on a design by Josef Škvorecký.
Klein studied film directing at FAMU in Prague from 1975 to 1991 and was the director of the Barrandov Film Studio. His other successful films included a film adaptation of Bohumil Hrabal’s short story Andělské oči. She devoted herself to television production mainly in the 1990s, bringing, among other things, the series Guardians of the Soul, Married Drowning and Confectionery. Klein also worked on the series Streets. Nevertheless, filmmaking was key for him.
Director Klein, who also taught at FAMU, had two sons with his wife Silver. He has had major health problems in recent years.
