The National Council of the Alpine country has in fact approved the provision after hours of debate with 137 votes in favor and 33 against.
The Minister of Health of Vienna, Wolfgang Mueckstein, he called the measure a “big and, this time, lasting step” in the country’s fight against the pandemic. Austria is the first country in the European Union to introduce the compulsory administration of the vaccine. To date, the other countries to approve such a measure have been Ecuador, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Indonesia and Micronesia. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), Austria has registered since the beginning of the pandemic over 519 thousand cases of contagion and just over 6 thousand deaths.
The vaccination obligation, therefore, “overrides” an initiative also conceived in Austria to convince skeptics, such as the lottery for vaccinated people which offered prizes of up to 500 euros.
