What Berliners can deliver – BZ Berlin
Berlin orders food. But was actually? I asked the two delivery services Lieferando and Wolt.
The starting point was an acquaintance who was upset that Wolt at the Wedding location would ONLY suggest vegetarian and vegan dishes. The number of offers in these categories is MUCH HIGHER than in others. As a meat eater, they feel bullied. ‘N bit exaggerated, but my quick check for Neukölln, Friedrichshain and Charlottenburg also shows that there is a lot of non-animal offerings.
Are meat eaters really being pushed aside to eke out a dreary existence among stewed carrots and brown rice?
Ask Wolt spokesman Fabio Adlassnigg. The fact that my friend IS offered a lot of V-Essen is due to the recommendation algorithm based on selected orders, the respective location and customer ratings. Adlassnigg: “Customers are consciously looking for restaurants with vegan and vegetarian options.” This is also confirmed by Lieferando. Spokeswoman Nora Walraph: “In 2021, 75 percent more vegan and vegetarian dishes were ordered than in the previous year.”
And what else do Berliners like to order?
Burgers, sushi, pizza, Vietnamese, Indian – these are the categories in which Wolt orders the most. At Lieferando, the Japanese cuisine is what is expected – in contrast to the rest of Germany, where mostly Italian is ordered. In the capital, this cuisine ranks second.
And the favorite dishes of Berliners?
At Lieferando, the cheeseburger comes in first place. In second place is the sushi as a salmon menu. At number 3 Indian butter chicken.
At Wolt, sushi, burgers and pizza are in the top 3 in all of Berlin. All of Berlin? No! Two indomitable districts step out of line. “Only in Berlin-Mitte and in Charlottenburg does Vietnamese creep into the top 3 and displace pizza,” says Adlassnigg.
Lieferando is also seeing increasing order numbers for North African (+27%) and German cuisine (+21%). And the bowl is becoming more and more popular.
What makes your heart beat even faster?
Meatballs à la Sweden. At least when it comes to a Wolt user. He or she ordered Köttbullar 30 times in the past year. Very cute!

And: Last year, a Wolt user carried out 757 (!) orders, around two per day. I hope this account belongs to a big company. Otherwise, the customer would probably only be richer in kilos. Unless he’s been eating stewed carrots the whole time.
But who already does that? At least if you have it delivered.
I do this when I’ve had a long day, am extremely lazy to cook and don’t have an appetite for a salad or sandwich. Instead, I want to make myself comfortable and reward myself. And that only works if there’s a bang.
What then comes with me in the cardboard box? Pizza with salami and gorgonzola or pasta with salmon in cream sauce – BAM!
