Plant Zurich the expansion of the school complex in Isengrind from 2025
By the summer of 2025, a new secondary school complex is to be built on the undeveloped property next to the existing Im Isengrind primary school in Zurich.
With the new building for the secondary school on the Im Isengrind school complex, the city is meeting the increasing need for school space in Zurich-Unteraffoltern and will create space for 20 classes by 2025. For the proposed creation of the city council, a property loan of 80.6 million francs to be handed over to the electorate.
The dynamic population development means that the need for school space in the Glattal school district is increasing. Therefore, in the summer of 2025, a new secondary school complex of the same name, including a double sports hall and new outdoor facilities, is to be built on the undeveloped property next to the existing primary school Im Isengrind.
The new building offers space for 18 secondary and two reserve classes in day school operation. In addition, rooms for two secondary classes of the curative education school, five music rooms of the Zurich Conservatory Music School and – for the primary school – a psychomotor room and catering rooms are to be made available.
Lots of greenery and a good CO2 balance
Club sports and the neighborhood in particular should benefit from the double sports hall with a large playing field measuring 20 x 40 meters and a small infrastructure for spectators outside of teaching and care times. Age-appropriate outdoor facilities, including an all-weather pitch, a grass playing field and a school garden, are planned in the generously landscaped outdoor area.
There are various synergies with the adjacent primary school, for example the existing jumping and speed running facilities can be used for outdoor sports lessons. The “Sensei” project by MSA Meletta Strebel Architekten AG envisages a four-storey wooden building made up of three cubes, which harmonises with the existing superstructure and creates a connection to the existing primary school via its moderate height and the central all-weather area.
Due to the prefabricated system timber construction, the new building, which is to be built to the Minergie-P-Eco standard with a photovoltaic system, has a very good CO2 balance. Minimal sealing and a larger tree population contribute to biodiversity and heat mitigation.
Construction is scheduled to start in February 2023
After the municipal council approved the necessary transfer of the building plot to the zone for public buildings and facilities, the city council now applied for a property loan of CHF 80.6 million (including reserves) for the construction of the new building.
Subject to the approval of the municipal council and the voters of the city of Zurich, the school complex can be built from February 2023 and put into operation in July 2025.
