Mayors of Breda and Amsterdam critical of corona policy: ‘Do not succumb to repressive temptation’ Breda
BREDA – Mayor Paul Depla of Breda, together with Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema, criticized the corona policy. He does this in an opinion piece for de Volkskrant. ‘A repressive government comes up against its own citizens’, writes the Rutte IV cabinet in their cry for help.
According to the mayors, the rapidly changing measures caused despondency among citizens. Even with the people who initially wanted to comply with the corona rules, ‘Right now that many citizens are at a loss, corona policy should not succumb further to the repressive temptation. In that case, the authority will continue to crumble to be able to impose mandatory measures – where necessary – and a trust problem arises,’ the mayors write.
To suggest
The call is prevented by all mayors involved in the implementation of the corona policy in the Security Council. The mayors suggest drafting: developing a long-term perspective, stopping drafting and drafting, and coming up with goals, being logical and reasonable.
Depla and Halsema accuse the cabinet that its own and essential responsibility has disappeared from the picture during the House of Representatives. As a result, according to them, the focus shifted from self-regulation to enforcement. According to the mayors, the fact that parliamentarians call for resistance or even violate emergency legislation does not help.
open society
‘In the crisis policy of recent years, the acute fight against the virus supplanted all other problems and interests in society. That is for a short period of time, but not anymore after two years, the mayors write in their opinion piece. Depla and Halsema initially thought that the Netherlands is an open society, in which public facilities and meeting places, such as culture and the catering industry, are always open. That is how theaters and museums meant on Wednesday protest actions against the measures taken by the cabinet. Mayors on Wednesday understanding. According to de Volkskrant, enforcers only hand out warnings perfunctorily.
