Company | Internet hubs: Marseille in the top 7 worldwide!
Displaying great ambitions in this area for a decade, the Marseille city is now in 7th place in the world ranking of internet hubs established by the telecommunications consulting and research firm Télégéographie. Marseille has indeed gained two new places, overtaking Stockholm and Miami. It must be said that with 15 submarine telecommunications cables landing on its coast, the city has become a major player in the global Internet, 99% of whose traffic passes through submarine links. These cables allow it to be connected to 43 countries and serve nearly 4.5 billion users. A phenomenal progression when we know that at the beginning of the 2010s, the Marseille city was only 44th in the world. An evolution made possible by the decision of international operators to establish themselves on its territory, such as the American company Interxion, of which three data centers (MRS1, MRS2, MRS3) are operational and a 4th (MRS4) is under construction, or the Japanese Telehouse whose THM1 data center provides reassuring redundancy.
The planned arrival between 2022 and 2025 of three new cables (Google Blue Raman, 2Africa and Sea-Me-We 6) should enable Marseille to rank 5th in the world, behind Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam and Paris, but ahead of Singapore, Hong Kong, and New York. Along with Paris and Marseille, France is the only European country to have two internet hubs listed in the world’s top 10.
