Two earthquakes “shook” Thessaloniki

Sugar Mizzy January 18, 2022

Felt in Thessaloniki took place tonight, Tuesday, two seismic vibrations.

THE first magnitude earthquake 3.2 degrees of scale Richter occurred shortly after 8:30 pm from the same focal area that gave Sunday the strong earthquake of 5.4 Richter in Halkidiki and specifically in the Trench of the North Aegean.

According to the Seismological Station of AUTh, the tremor occurred at 8:33 p.m. and its epicenter was in the sea area 16 kilometers south – southwest of Mount Athos. The focal depth was 12 km.

THE second seismic vibration came about an hour later and was felt in the area around him Χορτιάτη.

According to Professor of Seismology of AUTH, Vassilis Karakosta, the earthquake was 2.1 Richter and came from the area of Chortiatis, which has given some vibrations lately, with the first one of 3.4 Richter on December 28, 2021.

Asked about what do the earthquakes of the last days mean in both areas, Mr. Karakostas explains that “the activity in Trench of the northern Aegean is a rather intense post-seismic activity, concentrated but in small region. The data show that this earthquake-induced fault has different characteristics from those of large faults “and so”we can say that the 5.4 RichterSeems to have been the Mr earthquake.

Regarding the donations from his rift Χορτιάτη, the professor of Seismology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki clarifies that it is very small sizes of these earthquakes and recalls that “we have very often such»Vibrations throughout Greece.

According to his decision, the earthquakes focused on Chortiatis should not be a cause for concern.
