Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) – According to the will of the city government, the northern Mainkai in Frankfurt will be closed to cars again – at least initially at night and on weekends. According to the responsible department, a corresponding application received a majority in the transport committee on Monday evening. The road section should therefore be car-free from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and from Friday at 7 p.m. to Monday at 6 a.m., the same should apply on public holidays. In addition, it should be examined whether the Mainkai should be closed to cars during the school holidays. City officials still have to approve the move.
In a controversial traffic test, the unselected city government had already closed the Mainkai for a year. The question of how to proceed had become a bone of contention between the parties. The road was then reopened to traffic. The current governing Greens, SPD, FDP and Volt had agreed on another blocking, but this should take place gradually and become part of an overall concept.
