Ronald McDonald Houses Amsterdam join forces at one location
January 18, 2022 – 06:52
Ronald McDonald Huizen VUmc and Emma Amsterdam will continue together at one location as of 15 March 2022. Huis Emma then offers a warm home to all families whose type is set up in the Emma Children’s Hospital, part of the Amsterdam UMC. With this merger, the Ronald McDonald Houses follow the merger of the children’s departments of Amsterdam UMC.
The children’s departments of the Emma Children’s Hospital, until recently divided between the VUmc (Boelelaan) and AMC (Meibergdreef) locations, were merged at the AMC location at the end of 2021. The Ronald McDonald House is no longer needed at the VUmc location. Ronald McDonald House VUmc will therefore close its doors as of March 15, 2022. Ronald McDonald Houses Amsterdam follow the healthcare landscape, which is constantly changing.
Careful decision
The decision to leave the two Houses was made with care. With the merger of the two Amsterdam Ronald McDonald Houses in one location, we follow developments in healthcare and are where our help is most needed. This is a logical step, given the relocation of the pediatric wards of the Emma Children’s Hospital of Amsterdam UMC, from the VUmc location to the AMC location.”
Large-scale renovation House Emma
In order to be able to accommodate all families in the future, Huis Emma Amsterdam will be renovated, rebuilt and made more sustainable from the spring of 2022. During this renovation, families with a sick type can be placed in a temporary location, a few minutes’ walk from the Emma Children’s Hospital of Amsterdam UMC. Parents will also find a warm place close to their sick child during the renovation of the House. House Emma is expected to reopen its doors in the spring of 2023.
Much appreciation to volunteers
Ronald McDonald House VUmc has received more than 17,000 care in the past 23 years. This is only possible thanks to the strong network of volunteers, sponsors and donors. Aafke de Haan, manager Ronald McDonald Huizen Amsterdam: “We are extremely grateful to all volunteers, sponsors and donors who have put their heart and soul into Huis VUmc in recent years. Together we have really made a difference for families with a sick child.”
