The coalition in the Frankfurt Römer will close the Mainkai at night in 2022. Concepts are planned for diversions and the design.
Frankfurt – The coalition in Römer wants to block the northern Mainuferstraße for car traffic at night. This emerges from a current application by the Greens, SPD, FDP and Volt in Römer. This year, the Mainkai between Alter Brücke and Untermainbrücke is to be closed to motorized vehicles from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The coalition’s proposal goes beyond the coalition agreement. There was initially only talk of a nightly closure on weekends and public holidays. However, it should have been implemented in the contract since last year. “We’re late, that hurts us the most,” said Katharina Knacker (Greens) on Monday evening in the transport committee. Car traffic is no longer desired in the heart of Frankfurt. Frank Nagel (CDU) referred to his parliamentary group’s proposal to redesign the street with a reduction in lanes and a design towards the Main. “We want non-discriminatory mobility,” he said. “Before a blockage, we need traffic data for reliable planning,” demanded Nils Kößler (CDU). Manfred Zieran (Ökolinx) and Daniela Mehler-Würzbach (Left) joined the call for a car-free inner city. “We were the first to try to block the Mainkai,” emphasized Kristina Luxen (SPD). “It will be more beneficial for people,” announced Martin Huber (Volt).
Frankfurt: Mainkai is to be completely closed during the summer holidays
During the summer holidays, the Mainkai is to be completely closed to motor vehicles for six weeks – including during the day. Traffic and planning departments want to develop an open space and design concept together with citizens, said traffic department head Stefan Majer (Greens). The closure will be accompanied scientifically, the traffic shift will be analyzed. In addition, a diversion concept is planned. The Mainkai should also be closed for events at other times. This applies to the Mainfest, the Ironman and the marathon, among others. The magistrate should check whether the flea market can take place every two weeks on the Römerberg and the Mainkai or on the Fahrgasse and the Mainkai.
The Mainkai was already closed to motor vehicle traffic from summer 2019 to summer 2020. After the end of the traffic test, there was no majority in the famous coalition of CDU, SPD and Greens for the continuation of the closure.
The motion of the new coalition was accepted by a majority. CDU, AfD, BFF-BIG voted against. As now, Tempo 40 should apply on the road in the future. (Florian Leclerc)
