An acrid, pungent smell, “like rotten eggs”. In the last few hours, many people, residing in different areas of Naples and in the Neapolitan province, are complaining of a very strong smell of sulfur, as if the air were full of rotten eggs, in fact. Since yesterday evening, on social networks, especially in the neighborhood on Facebook and in those dedicated to the seismic activities of the Campi Flegrei, there have been reports on reports: from Vomero to Chiaia up to the historic center of Naples, passing through the cities of the province such as Pozzuoli, Casoria and Sant’Antimo, many citizens always complain about the same thing: “A very strong smell of sulfur, like rotten eggs”. For those who do not have to be practical, it is the smell that distinguishes the Solfatara area, in Pozzuoli, and in general the whole caldera of the Campi Flegrei: it is unusual, but not unlikely, that the distant stench can also be felt in these areas.

The Vesuvian Observatory reassures the population

More specifically, the characteristic smell of “rotten eggs” is given by the composition of sulfur and hydrogen that distinguishes the Campi Flegrei caldera, an area we know as being volcanic and highly seismic. The experts of the Vesuvian Observatory of Ingv (the National Institute of Geophysics) were keen to reassure the population who, and therefore normal, of the area which, due to the wind conditions of the last few hours, has also expanded into an area where it is normally not warned; the circumstance does not therefore indicate an imminent danger.
