Quick facts about horse racing in Sweden
Horse racing is one of the most popular sports in Sweden, and in particular seleracing.
Harness racing is conducted on 33 tracks across the elongated country and is overwhelming for trotting.
Trots, and the people who work with them, are part of the structure of Swedish society. Racedays are well attended and betting – which is carried out through ATG’s gaming agency, is extremely popular.
The competition is conducted all over the country, even in the far north – one of ATG’s ten big races for 2022 is Norbotten’s Grand Prize, which is held in the midnight sun in Boden, Sweden’s northernmost trotting track.
The most famous race in Sweden is The elite race, which is held at Solvalla trotting track in Stockholm. It is held over a mile on the last Sunday in May, the winner is decided after two qualifying rounds and a final on the same day.
With a first prize of 3 million Swedish kronor (approximately $ 330,000), it is one of the most prestigious trotting races in the world. Four North American trained horses have won it, including the champions Mack Lobell, Billyjojimbob, and Moni Maker. Other notable winners include Varenne, Victory Tilly, Timoko and Roquepine.
Solvalla, a 1000m (approximately five stages) course, also plays host of the Jubilee Cup, a one-mile event for 5-year-olds in August which is another of Sweden’s ten big races, together with the Swedish Trotting Criterium for 3-year-olds in September.
Another important place is Aby, on the outskirts of Gothenburg, Sweden’s second largest city. Also a 1000 m course, including Aby’s remarkable race Paralympic traverses (2140m, slightly less than 1 3/8 miles) in May and Aby Stora Pris in mid-August over 3140m (almost two miles).
The other major Swedish line is Jagersro, near Malmö in the south, which host of Hugo Aberg’s memorial in July and the Swedish Travderby in September. Sweden also has its own Breeders’ Crown Series, which ends with four finals in November in Eskilstuna, west of Stockholm.
Even though it is of less importance than harness games, thoroughbreds play a role in Sweden. Jagersro hosts some thoroughbred competitions but the most important track for gallops is Bro Park, northwest of Stockholm, which hosts the Stockholm Cup in September.
Normal winning, place and show games will be available when TwinSpires offers games on Swedish racing in early 2022. The signature games from ATG, V-wagers – which offer games on several races – should be available during the second quarter of 2022.
