The Phlegraean Fields are scary, the smell of sulfur all over Naples: what is happening
Strong smell of sulfur in different area of Naples and province. This is what was reported on the social networks by several citizens on the evening of Sunday 16 January. From the Aminei Hills to the hospital area, passing through the Arenella, the Salvator Rosa area and the Phlegraean area (Pianura, Soccavo, Fuorigrotta, Bagnoli), the latter being the area closest to Campi Flegrei where for months there have been numerous mini-earthquakes, some of which felt by the population because they register at a minimum depth, often less than two kilometers.
“It stinks of sulfur, it stinks of rotten eggs, what’s going on?”Asks for more than one user. In reality – according to the recent conclusions of the experts of theVesuvian Observatory and the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology – in a volcanic area with very extensive hydrothermal manifestations and in some intense areas, as in this case in the Campi Flegrei area (between Naples and Pozzuoli), the smell of sulfur (it is likely that it is a sulfur compound and hydrogen with the characteristic smell of rotten eggs) is not an exceptional event.
On the contrary. Its diffusion is conditioned by the winds and is not to be considered an event that could announce an imminent danger.
