Portugal registered sea level changes due to the eruption of the Tonga pattern – IPMA Atualidade
“The highest amplitude signal, about 40 cm, was recorded in Ponta Delgada, Azores, and the phenomenon was observed on the island of Madeira (20 cm average in Funchal) and on the Continent”, with the values, here, generally ” lower at 20 [centímetros], with the exception of Peniche, where there were averages of 39 [centímetros]”, refers to the IPMA, in a note published on its website, on the Internet.
The origin explains that “the origin of the records is related to the wave of constant nature of non-particular nature, by which it is defined as being conducive to oceans across the globe, in this case potentially generating the generation of month origin of the tsunami”.
“This tsunami generated these in the Pacific Ocean, spread across the oceans, including the Atlantic, with variations in sea level having been observed in all the various operations on the Portuguese coast, variations with amplitudes of less than half a meter”, informs the IPMA, adding that “it is monitoring the development of the situation”.
The eruption of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai, on Friday, on one of the uninhabited islands of Tonga, triggered a tsunami in Japan that affected the Pacific of Peru and the United States, with several alerts being launched in the region during during the day of Saturday.
