Florence, the ‘Stumbling stones’ are back in memory of 25 citizens
They will be remembered in Florence with a ‘stumbling block’ in the places where they lived
The “Stumbling Stones” return to Florence. Tuesday 18 and Thursday 20 January others 25 citizens, victims of deportation and fascists, will be remembered in Florence with a ‘stumbling block’ in the places where they lived.
This is a new stage of the project, wanted by the Jewish Community of Florence and the Municipality, which started after the approval of the specific resolution in 2019. The small brass plaques, made by the German artist Gunter Demnig, are set on concrete cubes that are embedded in the pavement in front of the victim’s last home. In Florence, the first eleven applications were made on January 9, 2020, in addition to the 13 placed on January 23 of the same year and the 24 of May 2021.
The first ceremonies are scheduled for Tuesday 18 January, carried out in compliance with the health regulations related to the pandemic, and will be attended by representatives of the municipal administration including the councilor for the Culture of Memory and Toponymy Alessandro Martini and the Jewish Community of Florence. It starts at 9.30 in via delle Oche 11 with a pose in memory of Diodato Gastone Sadun, second appointment at 10.30 in via degli Speziale 3 (the stone will be dedicated to Angela Todesco Benedetto).
We continue at 11.30 in piazza Santo Spirito 9 (to commemorate Rudolf Levy) and at 12.30 in via Mannelli 25 (Archimede Piani). At 2 pm it will be the turn of the stone in via Capo di Mondo 50 (in memory of Oliviero Della Torre, Anna Lina Fiano, Massimo Della Torre, Manlio Della Torre) and at 3 pm the ceremony is scheduled in via Manin 3 (Annetta Drawings Vogelmann and Sissel Vogelmann).
Last two appointments of the day at 4 pm in via Masaccio 76 (in memory of Gina Cave Bondì, Elena Segré, Giulio Segré, Lidia Segré) and at 5 pm in via Duprè 51 (Leone Camerino). Six ceremonies are scheduled for Thursday 20 January in six places in the city. It starts at 9.30 in via Giampaolo Orsini 51 with the stone dedicated to Bruno Baldini; at 10.30 it will be the turn of the stone of Corso Italia 19 (in memory of Gastone Volterra); appointment at 11.30 in via Fratelli Rosselli 78 (will be remembered Alberto Guetta and Pierluigi Guetta) and at 12.30 in via Alamanni 9 (Piero Viterbo).
At 2 pm the stones will be placed in piazza Vieusseux (dedicate to Enrico Castelli and Olga Renata Castelli) and at 3 pm the last ceremony in via Trieste 20 (Elena Calò and Ernesto Calò).
