The situation with coal reserves
Ukraine began to experience an acute shortage of thermal coal in the summer of 2014, when as a result of hostilities in the country completely lost control over the part of Donbass, where a large mine is located. After this country began to import coal.
On November 1, 2021, the Russian Federation stopped exporting thermal coal to Ukraine.
These are coal grade A (anthracite) and T (lean). Such coal was imported by DTEK (Luhansk TPP, Kryvyi Rih TPP), Donbasenergo (Slovyanska TPP) and Technova (Darnytsya TPP, Sumy TPP, Chernihiv TPP).
In January-November 2021, Ukraine increased its monetary expenditures on imports of coal and anthracite by 31% compared to the same period last year – up to 2.068 billion dollars.
On December 30, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Oleksiy Danilov said that the National Security and Defense Council would monitor the purchase of coal for domestic thermal power plants.
At the same time, experts expressed concern that coal reserves at Ukraine’s thermal power plants remain low. However, the Cabinet of Ministers has repeatedly stated that the situation with the supply of this type of fuel is under control.
