The US State Department confirmed the three cases over 20 minutes (pictured: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken). In the US it is believed that a foreign secret service is using microwave devices against US facilities to get data from computers and mobile phones.

Next to China, the Russian military intelligence service GRU (pictured: Russian President Vladimir Putin) is at the top of the list of suspects. The Soviet Union had already used microwaves against the USA to disrupt secret service operations.

  • Three cases of “Havana Syndrome” have occurred in the US consulate in Geneva.

  • The syndrome will probably from Blasts of “directional, pulsed radio frequency (RF) energy” caused, which are also used as weapons.

  • The US suspects the Russian military intelligence service GRU to be behind it.

“Sare US diplomats under covert attack?», ask yourself US media. to Rreal. Since 2016, at least 200 cases of the «Havana–Syndroms» Occurrence – almost exclusively in representatives and publications of American diplomacy, the CIA, the State Department and of pentagons.

Just last August, US Vice President Kamala Harris’ trip to Vietnam had to be postponed after two US embassy officials in Hanoi fell ill. In Serbia, Austria and India emerged in the last year Likewise cases.

Now Switzerland is also affected. At least three US citizens at the United States Consulate in Geneva have fallen victim to the mysterious disease. The US Embassy also reports a case in Paris.

«Directed, pulsed radio frequency energy»

The State Department confirmed that «abnormal health event» to 20 minutes and referred to a statement by Foreign Minister Antony Blinken last November: «The government has remained steadfast in investigating these incidents since they were reported by diplomats at the US Embassy in Havana more than five years ago, resulting in severe bodily harm and physical harm.»

The most likely culprit of this «damage» – ranging from headaches to loss of hearing and balance to brain damage – are beams of “directional, pulsed radiofrequency (RF) energy”. This is the conclusion most recently reached by a panel commissioned by the US Department of State I am December. Another study came to a similar conclusion in 2018.

Data theft: With microwave devices against US facilities?

Thereby can «directed energy» not be used solely as a weapon – although several countries have tested this and some companies sell directed energy weapon systems to take out drones.

At the «Havana–syndrome» the investigators in the USA assume that a foreign secret service has microwave devices on foreigne US facilities set up to get data from computers and cellphones. The associated health problems for the Americans should be a welcome side effect in this case.

Bin Laden hunter has taken over

The task force tasked with finding answers to the inexplicable health problems is now led by a CIA veteran who was involved in the hunt for al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.

But neither his task force nor the US intelligence services know for sure how the attacks are carried out in practice and who is really behind them. «We have interesting leads, but nothing solid», so a high-ranking CIA official for «Wall Street Journal».

Vienna Convention

In accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, Switzerland, as the receiving country, has to guarantee the security of foreign representations in Switzerland and their staff. However, the Swiss authorities did not want to comment on the case in Geneva, neither did Fedpol, the Department of Justice, the Federal Intelligence Service or the Department of Foreign Affairs wanted to comment. However, it can be assumed that investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Russia as number 1 suspect

Along with China, the Russian military intelligence service GRU is at the top of the list of suspects. After all, the Soviet Union already used microwaves against the USA under Josef Stalin to disrupt secret service operations. «Also today is associated with the Havana–Syndrome no novel technology used», says Marc Polymeropoulos, a former CIA operative and counterterrorism expert.

The fact that the US secret service has cell phone data from Russian military intelligence officers who were in the vicinity of the Americans at the same time as they fell ill in Cuba in 2016 also speaks for Russia. «A lot of these officers hakill previously participated in other Russian operations», i.e. polymeropoulos.

«Hardly assignable, extremely annoying, not to disguise»

The radiation attacks would also come to the Russian government’s penchant for outlandish acts of aggression on foreign soil, it says Paul Kolbe from on securitypolitics specialized «Belfer Center» – be it poisoning with radioactive isotopesin or actually nerve agentin like in Britain or executions in broad daylight As in Berlin.

«The elements of the attacks correspond to all parameters of hybrid warfare: they are deeply asymmetrical, not or only very difficult to assign, extremely disruptive and not to vermountains», says Kolbe. “The is an approach favored by the Russians, among others.»
