Hague, redundancy fund for avian flu: 6000 employees involved
VERONA – Employment crisis due to the outbreak of avian flu in the Hague of Verona. From today, Friday 14 January, the food giant of the Veronese Group with factories in Verona, Zevio and Nogarole Rocca opened the state of layoffs, activated until March 31st, in the Zevio plant, after the start of the layoffs on 6 December last in the production sites of San Martino Buon Albergo (the leader Aia) and Nogarole Rocca. About 6,000 employees involved, but the most affected are fixed-term workers, about 1000, for whom the is not valid layoffs.
“This is why today we asked for a table in the Veneto Region to try to start support for these workers – he explains Maria Pia Mazzasette, secretary of the Federation of workers in the agricultural industry of the CGIL of Verona -. The problem is linked to the lack of raw material, especially turkey treatment with avian that has hit the Veronese area, where most of the turkey farms are also located ».
In fact, Aia has suspended the production of turkey meat products until 31 January, after it was blocked until that date by the Ministry placement, that is, the placing in breeding, of new turkeys. Previously, the stop was until December 31st, but the continuation of the avian epidemic has led the institutions to extend the blockade until the end of January, with the hope that this, after the elimination of millions of heads of turkeys in infected farms, serve to stop the avian epidemic.
«In reality – clarifies Mazzasette – in the Hague we always worked in December, perhaps using the holidays for those slaughtering shifts linked to turkey meat. But since January the situation has become more severe with the company unable to find raw materials and therefore forced to stop production. Today, we only work on one shift, compared to the usual two in The Hague, and this for about 5,000 permanent workers means half of the redundancy fund, which means, among other things, 80% on half and not 100%. But above all, it means staying at home with no income for those with a fixed term of 1000 ”.
