Fuck this: Swedish village decides to change its name
The inhabitants of the Swedish village ‘Fucke’ have decided to change their name after they got tired of being censored when they wrote about their lives on Facebook.
The small village is located on Sweden’s High Coast and consists of only 11 properties.
It is located on the shores of Lake Fuckesjön and is within walking distance of another small settlement – Hump – which is located on the shores of Humpsjön.

According to the Institute of Language and Folklore, the earliest information about Fucke dates back to 1547, where it is described as “by a lake, located very high up on a slope with very steep fields”.
But despite their historical roots, homeowners in Fucke are tired – especially of their posts being censored by Facebook when they try to write about their village on social media, or when they try to sell things online.
Now they have agreed to send an application to Lantmäteriet to change its name to Dalsro (“silent valley”).
But according to Swedish STV, the process can take some time and the people of Fucke are unlikely to get an answer before the summer.
First, the board must address the issue together with the Institute of Languages and Antiquities.
Place names are regulated by the country’s cultural environment law, and the law’s rules on good place name practice.
“Place name practice according to this law means that, among other things, place names must be written according to accepted norms for written Swedish, and that place names that are now used can not be changed unless there are special reasons,” Lantmäteriet told STV in an email.
‘If new names are created, the effect on previously existing names must be taken into account. Therefore, if a site already has an established name, there must be strong reasons to change it. ‘
In 2007, 15 inhabitants of the Swedish village Fjuckby – a village in Uppsala with only 60 inhabitants – tried and failed to change their name to Fjukeby.
The small village, located on Sweden’s High Coast (pictured), consists of only 11 properties. It is located on the shores of Lake Fuckesjön (‘Fucke Lake’) and is within walking distance of another small settlement – ‘Hump’ – located on the shores of Lake Humpsjön.
Instead, Lantmäteriet chose to follow the Institute for Language and Folklore’s advice to keep the original name.
There are a number of other Swedish villages with eyebrow-raising names.
In the ski town of Mora there is a place named Rövhålet which is literally translated as The B *** hole.
While Djupröven also causes a lot of embarrassment for the locals because it means Deep A ***.
In northern Sweden, about 150 km from Skellefteå, is the welcoming region Sexträsk, also known as Sexträsk.
And for those who dare to go north of Stockholm, keep an eye out for a place called Bögs Gård which also means Gay’s Farm.
Animal lovers can take offense at the apt title Kattsjärten i Värmland, which has a local translation of Cat’s Bottom.
At the same time, Snormossen is otherwise known as Snot Moss, whereby Varberg in Halland County is called Puss Mountain.
Residents of a city in Austria were more fortunate than those in Fjuckby, when in December 2020 they successfully requested that their city called “F *** ing” be changed to the less rude “Fugging”.

Local residents, of whom there are only 100, endured decades of jokes from English speakers and the frequent thefts of their signs by visitors.
Tourists often made a point of stopping to take selfies in front of the sign at the city entrance and post them on social media.
In 2018, the pornographic website Pornhub said that it offers premium access to fucking residents.
The Tarsdorf City Council decided that the city of F *** ing, after having existed for almost 1,000 years, will be renamed Fugging from January 1, 2021.
Municipal Mayor Andrea Holzner announced the name change in November: ‘I confirm that it has actually been decided by the City Council. I will say no more about that.
But when the new signs were put up, unhappy locals smeared them with black spray paint to show the original name “F *** ing”.
