The Modissa fashion house is one of the most traditional Swiss clothing stores. The complete refurbishment of the branch on Bahnhofstrasse was only completed in 2015, and it has now been announced that it will be closed on August 1, 2022. This was confirmed by the fashion house’s communications officer to the “daily scoreboard».
Other branches are also affected by the restructuring: the shop in Winterthur is also to be closed completely, and the headquarters on Grubenstrasse will downsize the family business. With the closure of the branches, 75 employees will also lose their jobs. Modissa has informed internally about the closures in the last few days and wants to draw up a social plan to support the staff.
Focus on BIG branches
Modissa justifies the closure of the branches with a change of strategy. In the future, the fashion house will increasingly focus on the four BIG shops, which are also part of the family business that has existed since 1944. According to their own statements, they have now positioned themselves well on the market and have a young clientele. In recent years, the pressure on the retail trade has increased sharply with many changes, moreover, the pandemic has prevented important projects and new initiatives and the growing decline in Modissa stores from being amplified.
manager leaves
In addition to the 75 employees affected by the business closures, Jean-Pierre Kuhn will also reorient himself professionally from autumn 2022. The managing director does not want to give any information about his professional future, but promises to closely accompany the transition phase that has now begun until his departure. His goal is to find happy connection solutions for everyone. From February 2022, Marc Huber will take over as managing director of the fashion house.
The future of the branch is still unclear
It is not yet clear who will probably use the striking building with its rounded façade on Bahnhofstrasse. It was completed in 1975 and has been a listed building since 2014. Since the refurbishment, the sixth floor of the building has housed the rooftop restaurant run by restaurateur Michel Péclard. Modissa management is also considering the option of renting individual floors. The company did not disclose the amount of the rent.
