For the past 12 years the castles of Serravalle and Borgo Maggiore were the most affected by the fires, with over half of the 248 phenomena recorded from 2010 onwards. The data is contained in the master’s degree thesis in Civil Engineering discussed on 10 December by Simone Pazzini, author of an analysis from which the first register of forest fires on the Titan was born, as part of an internship that involved the University of the Republic of San Marino and the Civil Protection Service.
The thesis, illustrated at the University of Customs World Trade Center, led, among other things, to definition of a series of maps in which the areas of the republic most at risk have been identified in detail. Among the elements analyzed, in addition to the figures on fires provided by the Civil Police – Fire Protection Section, the times and months of the year in which the incidents occurred, the location of public hydrants and the causes of the phenomena. By the way, according to what reported, “the disposal of vegetable waste due to the pruning of olive groves and vineyards” is at the base state “of more than 54% of the events recorded in the historical series 2010 – 2021. This practice, as well as being of great danger for public safety, it is a source of great pollution for the whole territory “.
In addition to the fire register, Pazzini has validated two documents already contained in the emergency plan of the Civil Protection. The “plant-based pyrological potential chart“Indicates the most critical areas of the Titan on the basis of the” propensity of a forest to be crossed by a fire, identifying the causes and in particular the definition of prevention and containment measures “. The “interface fire hazard card”Instead points out the areas in which he might be interested, for example, homes and offices.
In the study, the 35-year-old resident in San Marino under the coordination of professor Roberto Mugavero and geologist Valentina Ugolini Pazzini notes that in the light of the realization of the “climate changes expected for the future decades, with a rise in temperatures, the expected and an increase in phenomena intense thunderstorms “, the activity of “forecasting and prevention enhanced with the forest fire register appears to be the only weapon that man can put in place to prevent and guarantee the inhabitants of that territory the highest level of safety “.
