Skipper’s daughters breathe new life into the tavern of the legendary Kerkschip on Eilandje (Antwerp)
If you would like to go to Antwerp’s Eilandje for a snack and drink, you can again visit the Kerkschip in the Houtdok since last week. Two skipper’s daughters have revived the tavern of the church nave and the users of the ship are very happy with that, born the pastor. (atv)
The Kerkschip was built by the Nazis during the Second World War in Rotterdam as a concrete bunker ship to stock the submarines of the Kriegsmarine in the high seas. For finishing it was towed to Antwerp in 1944, where it fell into the hands of our country during the liberation. At the end of 2011, it was protected as maritime protected.
After a long search for a new owner and a closure due to corona, Linda Beeckmans now wants to make the floating tavern a bruise again with her sister Cynthia. The sisters know the area very well, because they come from a skipper family. “I spent my childhood in the skippers’ schools in Antwerp and during the holidays on my father’s barge, the ‘Ituna’, a 39-meter striker,” says Linda.
Taverne ‘t Kerkschip offers daily specials and dishes à la carte and is open every day on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
