Venice opens the parade, Genoa wins
65th Palio of the Ancient Maritime Republics: Genoa triumphs, but Venice fights on an equal footing and closes the historic rowing competition in third place. The Genoa Galleon therefore won the 65th edition of the Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics which took place on the home waters of the Prà Rowing Basin. An exciting regatta fought blow for blow from the start to the finish with great uncertainty about the final outcome that at the end of the two kilometers of the race smiled at the crew from Genoa who managed to prevail with a tip over the opponents of Amalfi, while the outgoing champions of Venice finished in third place in front of the Galleon of Pisa, which came more detached. For Genoa this is the tenth success achieved in the history of the Regatta, while in the overall roll of honor Venice always remains in the lead with 34 wins ahead of Amalfi with 12. Updated the roll of honor, we can say that it was an unprecedented competition that will be remembered as the Palio di Natale. Never before this year had the competition, always held in the spring period, slipped so far into December. A decision motivated, as it is easy to imagine, by the Covid emergency. In 2022, in an equally extraordinary way, there will be two editions: the first between April and May, for the second the one canceled in 2020. So from 2023 the situation will be able to return to full capacity and Venice will return to play at home, just like in 2019, the last pre-pandemic. The very exciting Genoa race saw the green Venetian galleon in the lead up to about 150 meters from the finish and therefore at the height of 1850 meters. Then the imperious shot of Genoa, which catalyzed the game of currents in the best possible way and a better water lane attributed by the draw. Honor to Genoa which he deservedly won, but praise also goes to Venice, and to all the four cities participating in the starting line.
On their return, the Venetians also encountered Covid’s tail shot: five positive team members, all quarantined during the holiday season.
