Urban green in schools, 471 thousand euros in Pisa
The Municipality of Pisa has been awarded a loan of over 471 thousand euros thanks to the participation in the tender of the Ministry of Ecological Transition established as part of the “Experimental program of interventions for adaptation to climate change in the urban environment”.
The project awarded by the Ministry was presented by the Green Office of the Municipality of Pisa and provides for the arrangement of courtyards and green areas of 28 schools including kindergartens, kindergartens, primary and secondary schools in the city, with the planting of 500 new trees. .
«It is a great satisfaction – declares the councilor for greenery and care of urban quality Raffaele Latrofa – was awarded this umpteenth call, especially on the issue of ecological implementation on which our administration is engaging with urban forestry and is one of the most avant-garde municipalities at national level. A particularly important call as it is aimed at green areas in schools, which will allow not only the redevelopment of the outdoor spaces of 28 schools with the planting of 500 new trees, but will also help raise awareness and train the citizens of tomorrow on issues that we consider fundamental as that of the environmental protection of our city ».
“The recovery and redevelopment of green spaces such as parks, avenues or gardens, today represents a necessary tool to counter the damage caused by unscheduled urbanization and excessive overbuilding that has been carried out indiscriminately in many neighborhoods – he continues Latrofa -. The intervention awarded by the Ministry aims to considerably increase the arboreal heritage of the school complexes, reinvigorating these small “green lungs” present within the city and is configured as a real urban forestry intervention: the various owned schools of the Municipality of Pisa are, in fact, within the urbanized territory and the planting of new trees in these areas will contribute to the abatement of climate-altering emissions in the urban environment, resulting in an improvement in the air quality from which the of schools and citizens residing in the surrounding areas “.
The program specifically aims to redevelop the 28 school courtyards through the replanting of multiple tree species, for a total of 512 new plantings and the removal of any pine trees that are unsafe. (Each specimen of inclined pine will be evaluated in advance and established whether to cut it down or not on the basis of an instrumental analysis performed by specialized personnel). For the choice of the species to be planted, their characteristics were taken into account regarding the absorption of pollutants, the origin favoring native and rustic plant species, the low allergenicity and the presence on the site, however favoring biodiversity and using species that allow feeding and shelter for insects, birds and small mammals and avifauna.
