How high is the parking pressure on Frankfurt streets? The magistrate does not provide any information on this. Other cities are further along.
How high is the parking pressure on the streets in Frankfurt? The Left in Römer wanted to know from the magistrate six months ago. The answer to the opposition party is very simple. The magistrate does not record the parking pressure – unlike other cities. “For both personal and financial reasons, it is not possible to carry out such investigations for each individual area or even for individual streets,” says the magistrate’s report. The parking pressure is determined “mainly by visual inspection”.
According to the Research Association for Roads and Transport, parking pressure can be clearly determined: With an occupancy of up to 60 percent, there is no parking pressure – many parking spaces are free. With a load of up to 70 percent, the parking pressure is low, up to 80 percent medium, up to 90 percent high, and up to 100 percent very high. If the capacity is more than 100 percent, the available parking space is obviously overloaded. With an occupancy of up to 120 percent there are some illegal parking stops, over 120 percent occupancy there are many illegal ones.
The parking pressure was examined in Berlin, for example – in a somewhat more recent report on parking space management in the old town of Köpenick from February 2011 – or in Kiel: The study “Parking space investigation and management” is from September 2021. Methodologically, the characteristics of stationary traffic and the available parking spaces are recorded.
According to its own statements, the municipal authorities in Frankfurt have not yet heard of this. “The magistrate has no comparative figures on parking pressure with other German and international cities and municipalities,” the report says.
The left in Römer was disillusioned. “Now we are learning that the determination of the parking pressure in Frankfurt is determined simply by visual inspection. Ultimately, this opens the door to the arbitrariness of the authorities, ”said Daniela Mehler-Würzbach, transport policy spokeswoman for the Left. Your criticism: With the argument of high parking pressure projects of the traffic turnaround would be prevented, such as the conversion of parking spaces in public spaces. The yardstick in traffic planning should be the needs of pedestrians, cyclists and residents. “The perceived parking space occupancy expressed in the parking pressure must not block the traffic turnaround.”
