The ongoing dispute between Lithuania and China will prompt the European Union (EU) to take urgent retaliatory action to prevent China from blackmailing the Community.
This was announced on Thursday by the Brussels news portal Politico.
France, which will take over the presidency of the EU Council from the first half of January, promises to make Community policy more decisive and to strengthen its defense arsenal in trade disputes.
The EU must plan to develop a new EU anti-coercion instrument to deal with this. However, the preparation and implementation of the new legislation may take several years, and the signal sent by Paris that action should be taken earlier in the event of a dispute between Lithuania and China.
Asked if the Paris press would prevent the EU from putting pressure on Beijing before the mechanism was set up, one senior French official, Politico, said: “Yes. We will take action very soon. “
“Negotiations on the anti-pressure mechanism are still ongoing, but perhaps it could be done in advance in support of Lithuania,” he said.
Lithuanian-Chinese relations have plummeted, with Vilnius allowing the Taiwanese mission to operate in the country, using the island’s name in its name. Experts say the Chinese name of the mission sounds like a Taiwanese mission. Beijing sees Taiwan’s attempts to act as the state needs.
In the wake of the diplomatic conflict, Lithuanian businessmen reported experiencing various restrictions on trade with China. National policies have called them unannounced sanctions.
