Corona: 8,853 new infections on Thursday in Austria
8,853 corona infections were reported in Austria on Epiphany. That was a little less than the day before – the number of new cases jumped dramatically from around 5,500 to 9,761 within 24 hours – but the value is again well above the average of the last seven days (5,421). The seven-day incidence on Thursday was now 424.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, after 361.8 on Wednesday.
As of Thursday there are 51,364 active cases in Austria, 6,374 more than the day before. There have been 1,312,939 confirmed infections since the start of the pandemic. Most of the new cases were reported from Vienna (2,223), filled by Lower Austria (1,294), Salzburg (1,235), Tyrol (1,200) and Upper Austria (1,166). Then came Styria (796), Carinthia (435), Vorarlberg (362) and Burgenland (142).
The number of corona deaths is increasing again
The number of Covid deaths has also increased again – there have been 21 services since Wednesday, on a seven-day average it was 17.4 a day. A total of 122 Covid-19-related relationships have been registered over the past seven days. In total, the pandemic has so far claimed 13,823 deaths in Austria. 154.7 people per 100,000 inhabitants have now died of or with Covid-19.

Fewer patients in hospitals
According to data from the health authorities, 971 people locked themselves in the hospital, 39 fewer than on Wednesday. 295 people were cared for in intensive care units. That number has dropped by 14 since Wednesday and has fallen by 50 patients and patients in a week. On Epiphany, it was below 300 for the first time since November 1 of last year (then 292). A month ago, on St. Nicholas Day, 661 Covid patients had to be cared for in intensive care units.
1,247,752 people have recovered since the outbreak of the epidemic, and 2,458 were considered healthy again within the last 24 hours.
Around 50,000 vaccinations on Wednesday
51,352 vaccinations were given on Wednesday. According to the data in the e-vaccination pass, a total of 6,635,916 people have received at least one corona vaccination, 6,294,074 (70.5 percent) have valid vaccination protection. Yesterday there were 5,238 first stitches (10.2 percent), more than the seven-day average of 2,982. A total of 20,874 first vaccinations were carried out within the past seven days. Second stitches were set 14,582 times, also above average with a seven-day average (10,097). A total of 70,680 second stitches were used in seven days. With 31,532, the third stitches (61.4 percent) again made up the largest share. They were well above the seven-day average of 16,569, a total of 115,983 “boosters” were set within the past week.
