Andrea Marino, the “angel” of dance is from Bronte
“Never, never, never give up.” It is a phrase uttered by Winston Churchill that has remained in history. Summarize the need to throw the heart over the obstacle, overcome seemingly insurmountable barriers in order to make your dreams come true. A goal that is never easily conquered, because it feeds on tenacity, achievement and sacrifice.
All qualities that we find in the young Andrea Marino, 23 years old from Bronte that in order to cultivate her passion for dance she was not afraid to leave home at the young age of 14 to move to the “severe” Vienna. In Austria, Andrea studied with passion and trained with a will to make his body acquire such excellent qualities as to allow him today to perform in the most famous theaters in Europe, such as the “Bayerische Staatsoper” in Munich and the “Kungliga Operan”, the Swedish royal theater.
«My passion for dance – he tells us – began at 6 years old. After seeing dance on TV I had no doubts: that was my goal. I immediately talked about it with my parents who became my first supporters. I began to attend a dance school in Bronte, Isabella Sindoni’s “All Jazz”, realizing how, year after year, the passion grew more and more. One day some auditions were made. On that occasion I was offered to participate in a scholarship for the Vienna State Opera Academy ».
A dream for Andrea and his parents, but also a moment of choices and challenges. «Yes – he explains – deciding to move to Vienna at the age of 14 was not an easy choice. The unknown factor of being alone, away from my parents, facing a challenge that by definition rewards very few, worried us. But we all thought of the great opportunity that was unfolding in front of us. We went to Vienna, I did the audition which went very well. It was a great joy ». But it was from this moment that the most difficult part of his preparation began for Andrea. In fact, in Vienna he underwent hard study and training sessions that enhanced his qualities.
«I will never forget – says Andrea – the moment I left Bronte and my family. I found myself alone in a large European city. The difficulties were many, as well as the distractions. But I had only one goal and I put all my strength into it to conquer it. Dancers force their bodies to perform gestures that may seem unnatural. I know well how the results are obtained with 10% of talent and 90% of sacrifice ».
And in Vienna Andrea obtained a special prize and many recognitions that, after 3 years, they opened the doors of what is considered one of the most qualified academies in the world. Luca Masala, Italian and director of the Monte Carlo Academy, noticed him and took him with him to the Principality. Andrea stayed there for another 2 years, before taking off for good. «In Montecarlo – he explains – we trained from 7 in the morning until 19 in the evening. It takes a lot of passion and determination for strength and concentration ». And Andrea headed straight for his goal, auditioning to be hired in one of the most important theaters in Europe, the Bayerische Staatsoper. «Yes – he continues – he began his career as a professional, certainly different from the academic world. You were no longer a student and performed alongside great dancers. A world of magic that culminates when the audience supports you and applauds you, repaying the continuous sacrifices. These are sensations that even rich words are unable to describe ».
But despite a monk Andrea plays more solo roles every day, his ambition led him to become a dancer at the Swedish Royal Theater in Stockholm which is a legend in the world of dance. «It is a bit part of my character – he explains – to know new worlds, other choreographers and try my hand at new repertoires».
But in Stockholm Andrea did not only show his qualities, found love. He met Haruka Sassa, Japanese, who is prima ballerina at the Kungliga Operan. His story is also made of study and sacrifice since he was 5 years old. «We met a year and a half ago – he says excitedly -. We started chatting between one test and another, between one step and another, until we fell in love ». And Andrea took Haruka to Bronte during these Christmas holidays.
Both were with community and community affection party. «Bronte is a city – said the mayor – that boasts world excellence in various sectors. Andrea is certainly one of these in the field of dance ». However, the days of vacation were few for both. On January 14 Andrea will have to return to Germany, called again by the Munich theater, as a solo dancer. He knows he has to wander around Europe, actually with a hint of nostalgia for Italy: «For a dancer, working in Germany means performing in front of a competent audience. I miss Italy, but we dancers in our country cannot find the certainties and certainties that Europe guarantees us. It’s sad to say, but that’s the way it is. I would like to bring art to my country, but it’s not easy. Theaters close year after year, while in Germany almost every municipality, even a small one, has a state opera. In Italy we do not go beyond the La Scala theater in Milan and the Opera theater in Rome ». And Andrea every time he returns to Bronte sees his first school and his room where everything started from. «To the children who try their hand at dance, I tell them never to give up. Arrenders is the simplest thing, but continuing to fight fills you with satisfaction ».
